Dr. Alp Malazgirt is the YilMaden Holding CEO, Metals and Mining division of the parent Yildirim Group of Companies, www.yildirimgroup.com, based in Istanbul, Turkey, a rising star amongst the Turkish industrial conglomerates. Active in more than 11 sectors Yildirim Group is fast becoming a global company with its holdings and assets spanning over some 20+countries.
Dr. Malazgirt’s tenure at Yildirim coincided with the expansion of its metals and mining business in two countries, Turkey (EtiKrom) and Sweden (Vargon Alloys) to six countries: Voskhod Oriel chrome mining operations in Kazakhstan, Tikhvin Ferroalloy Plant in Russia, Bear Metallurgical Company in Butler, USA, and the recently acquired Best Coal Company in Colombia. YilMaden Holding is now the world’s second largest high quality high carbon ferrochrome producer in the world. YilKrom, another YilMaden company owns both exploration and production licenses in Turkey which are currently being explored. Dr. Malazgirt has played a key role in the post-merger integration of these cross border acquisitions and has been instrumental in the transformational changes undertaken in these otherwise poorly performing or even bankrupt companies.
Dr. Malazgirt as the YilMaden Holding CEO initiated many innovative projects including the recycling of “legacy” tailings both at the EtiKrom and Voskhod operations, extensive exploration projects on the concessions and licenses owned by YilMaden, and many corporate social responsibility projects which have received numerous accolades and awards from organizations such as the EBRD, EMEAFinance, ICDA, and CIS National Business Rating Agency. He focused on training and educating the local talent to fully staff the operations and providing equality of opportunity to the local community members. All in all, he stressed the importance of being a good corporate citizen of the community and earn the “social license to operate”.
Prior to joining Yildirim Holding and relocating to Istanbul, Turkey, Dr. Alp Malazgirt lived in Korea where he was an Associate Dean and Associate Professor of business management and worked as a consultant on many high tech projects related to metals and mining. Perhaps most importantly, he was instrumental in the development and commercialization of a few mineral processing projects including extraction of lithium from seawater, which later the technology rights were sold to POSCO, and underwater manganese nodule leaching.
Prior to his tenure in the Far East, he was in the USA and had a distinguished career in the Silicon Valley with two silicon chip manufacturing companies. His last position was the Vice President of Global Operations. After his 18 years in the high tech field, he started a solar photovoltaic panel company and later was the founding member of two service company ventures which are still going strong in California. He has more than 25 years of commercial experience working in the high-tech and management fields and is the recipient of many awards.
Dr. Malazgirt has a BS degree in metallurgical engineering from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and an MS from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and a Ph. D. in Materials Science and Engineering with a minor in chemical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, California, USA. He is the recipient of three patents and has published in excess of 20 technical articles and made more than 50 presentations at international venues.
